Finding Aids

Finding aids describe archival collections to help users navigate their contents and identify material relevant to their research. Finding aids provide a summary of a collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Researchers may use the "Search Box" below to search by keyword or collection number (ex. 2016-0738-F). Researchers may narrow their search results by filtering by finding aid type, record type, or tag. Finding Aid Types

Finding aid types include Freedom of Information Act Collections, Systematically Processed Collections, and Mandatory Declassification Review Collections.

Freedom of Information Act Collections provide a summary of a collection requested under the Freedom of Information Act, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Systematically Processed Collections provide a summary of a collection processed systematically, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Mandatory Declassification Review Collections provide a summary of a collection released via a Mandatory Declassification Review, and an Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf) of the declassified records.

Collection Description Tags

A Tag is a descriptive term attached to a finding aid to establish relationships between collection descriptions. Multiple tags can be used to describe collections.

Specifically the PP005-01 subject code associated with the First Lady, and contains correspondence, memoranda, schedules, press materials, emails, and notes mostly regarding scheduling requests for the First Lady.

This collection consists of material dealing with Sydney, Australia’s bid to host the 2000 Summer Olympic Games. Other cities involved in the competition for this coveted prize included Manchester, England, Istanbul, Turkey, and Berlin, Germany. Sydney eventually prevailed and provided a model for others to follow as it proved to be a vibrant setting for the XXVII Olympiad. The collection contains memoranda, lists, newspaper articles, correspondence, press briefings, resumes, schedules, and reports.

This collection consists of records concerning three convicted teenagers that became widely known as the “West Memphis Three.” The three teenagers - Jessie Misskelley, Jr., Damien Echols, and Jason Baldwin - were convicted in 1994 for the 1993 murders of three eight year old boys in West Memphis, Arkansas. This collection contains letters of letters of sympathy from President Clinton to the families of the children who were murdered in the West Memphis area. This collection also includes email containing public opinion concerning the West Memphis Three.

This collection contains photographs and videos relating to the Israeli and Palestinian Peace Process, which also includes material relating to Middle East Peace as a topic. President William Jefferson Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton are the primary participants in the materials, along with various Clinton administration staff as noted. The date ranges for the material includes October 25 through 29, 1994, September 28, 1995, November 5 through 6, 1995, October 15 through 23, 1998, March 25 through 26, 2000, and July 11 through 25, 2000. Photographs and video recordings relate to arrivals, departures, in-transit events, meetings, photo-ops, press briefings, and other Presidential ceremonies during the requested dates.

This collection consists of National Security Council Records Management Numbered documents related to the Kosovo Refugee crisis from March of 1998 until June of 1999. The collection contains Congressional correspondence, memoranda between the President and National Security Advisor Sandy Berger, and letters from concerned individuals including the former Prime Minister of Yugoslavia, Milan Panic. The records also include memoranda and reports concerning the allocation of money for refugee assistance programs, as well as press accounts regarding the effectiveness of United Nations refugee assistance efforts.

This collection consists of the records of speechwriter Josh Gottheimer. Gottheimer served as Special Assistant to the Director of Speechwriting in 1998, where he supervised the Speechwriting Office’s internship program, and as Presidential Speechwriter and Staff Director from 1999-2001. This collection consists of draft and final copies of speeches for President Clinton and Chief of Staff John Podesta as well as the corresponding research, memos, and discussion notes. Gottheimer specialized in drafting speeches for sports events, videos, and radio addresses. There are also numerous speech drafts, memos, and notes from brainstorming sessions from the 1998-2000 State of the Union addresses. In addition to these, the files include correspondence, memos, schedules and calendars of the President, news clippings, articles, speech drafts and final copies, faxes, email, and notes.
Systematically Processed Collection Textual
This collection consists of the speechwriting files of Laura Capps, who served in the Speechwriting Office from 1997-1998. The files include drafts of remarks and speeches primarily covering domestic topics such as memorial dedications and individual tributes. The records in this collection also include background materials as well as transcripts of speeches as delivered. The files contain drafts, memos, faxes, press releases, schedules, biographical information, internship applications, requests and proposals, press clippings, correspondence, and publications.
