The film, released on July 1, 1997, is a science fiction film about the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Program. The screenplay was co-written by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan and based on the novel of the same title written by Sagan. This collection consists of memos regarding the use of the President’s image in the film and email concerning the film’s co author and Sagan’s wife, Ann Druyan. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2006-1878-F) Meteorite ALH 84001 - Mars This collection consists of speech drafts, press releases, news transcripts, memos, email and cables pertaining to the NASA discovery of the Allan Hills (ALH) Meteorite 84001 meteorite, mentioned by President Clinton in a statement on August 7, 1996. ALH 84001 is believed to be from Mars. The meteorite made worldwide headlines in 1996 when scientists announced that it might contain evidence for microscopic fossils of Martian bacteria. Credited with popularizing science and astronomy, Sagan promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence and published a novel, "Contact." These files contain correspondence, email, and other records related to Sagan's work, his relationship with the White House, and his death on December 20, 1996. It contains National Security Council cables and emails regarding the August 1998 airstrikes against al Qaeda targets in Afghanistan and Sudan, Usama bin Ladin, terrorism, and the prohibition on assassination contained in Executive Order 12333. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2006-1990-F) Northern Ireland Peace Process This collection consists of records related to the Irish Peace Process. The collection contains correspondence from Congress and the public, memoranda, cables, and speeches related to the Northern Ireland Peace Process. The collection also contains emails, which include press guidance, scheduling issues, draft correspondence responses, drafts of the 1998 National Security Strategy Report, and discussions President’s and First Lady’s trips to Ireland and Northern Ireland in 1995 and 1998. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2006-1991-F) The Tuskegee Syphilis Study Ceremony This collection consists of records from the Executive Office of the President, including the President’s schedule for the event and his remarks, the timeline for the ceremony and the invitation list to the Ceremony in Recognition of the Survivors of the Study at Tuskegee. On May 16, 1997, President Clinton issued a public apology to the survivors of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, which was conducted by the United States Public Health Service and lasted from 1932 until 1972. The Study recruited African American men to study the effects of untreated syphilis. The men were not told about their illness and treatment was withheld. NWIRP- Calverton was operated by Northrop Grumman Corporation until February 1996. This collection consists of correspondence, statements, memoranda, and email. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2007-0036-F) Spratly Islands This collection consists of records related to an international dispute over the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. It contains National Security Council cables and emails concerning White House press briefings, trade issues with China, and Most Favored Nation (MFN) negotiations. The collection also includes a set of 49 letters to various Congressmen responding to their critique of the Clinton administration’s policy toward China, Taiwan, and the World Trade Organization. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2007-0080-F) Jane Sherburne - Office of Counsel to the President - "Communication Conspiracy" This collection consists of a binder titled “Communication Conspiracy” from the staff and office files of Jane Sherburne from the Counsel’s Office. The binder mostly consists of news articles and summaries. These records describe the means by which news organizations received and published stories, reports, and editorials concerning President Clinton, his staff, and his administration. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2007-0088-F) Catholics - Roman Catholic Church This collection consists of correspondence, talking points, drafts of correspondence, guest lists, articles, email, cables, publications, speeches, and executive summaries concerning relations between the Clinton Administration and Catholics. The records primarily focus on U.S. Catholic bishops on the issues of abortion, the death penalty, health care, and American involvement in Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia. The collection also covers various Catholic organizations and the Clinton Administration meeting with the Pope. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2007-0096-F) "Slaughter: An American Atrocity" - Book This collection consists of email, the majority of which were forwards and mass circulated to a wide variety of recipients. The majority of the email concern the publication of Carroll Case’s book The Slaughter: An American Atrocity. Case’s book claimed that in 1943, 1,200 members of the Army’s, 364th Infantry Regiment—a black regiment—were killed by white soldiers during a riot at Camp Van Dorn, near Centreville, Mississippi. Following release of the book, the U.S. Army undertook an investigation into the matter. The records in this collection also contain public statements made by the U. S. Army and Department of Justice regarding investigations of the reported incident. There is also a memo from the Office of Records Management, dated May 8, 1995, regarding the correct mailing address for Shirley MacLaine. Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual (2007-0141-F) Executive Order 12871 - Labor-Management Partnerships This collection consists of records related to Executive Order 12871 on Labor-Management Partnerships. This Executive Order, which President Clinton signed on October 1, 1993, created the National Partnership Council. The Council was comprised of members of the major labor union and advised the President on labor-management relations within executive branch agencies. This collection consists of correspondence, White House memoranda, and email regarding matters related to Executive Order 12871.
