Finding Aids

Finding aids describe archival collections to help users navigate their contents and identify material relevant to their research. Finding aids provide a summary of a collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Researchers may use the "Search Box" below to search by keyword or collection number (ex. 2016-0738-F). Researchers may narrow their search results by filtering by finding aid type, record type, or tag. Researchers may also select for "Digitized Content" to view only collections that have been digitized.

Finding Aid Types

Finding aid types include Freedom of Information Act Collections, Systematically Processed Collections, and Mandatory Declassification Review Collections.

Freedom of Information Act Collections provide a summary of a collection requested under the Freedom of Information Act, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Systematically Processed Collections provide a summary of a collection processed systematically, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Mandatory Declassification Review Collections provide a summary of a collection released via a Mandatory Declassification Review, and an Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf) of the declassified records.

Collection Description Tags

A Tag is a descriptive term attached to a finding aid to establish relationships between collection descriptions. Multiple tags can be used to describe collections.

AIDS (Disease)Finding aid descriptions of collections having to do with the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and/or the treatment of HIV infections. Finding aids also describe policy concerning individuals, groups, or countries seeking treatment or subsidies for AIDs and HIV.

This collection consists of correspondence, reports, and email regarding a crash in Roswell, New Mexico in July 1947. The origin of the crashed object remains in dispute today. A July 1995 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, “Government Records: Results of a Search for Records Concerning the 1947 Crash near Roswell, New Mexico,” is included in the files. Also included are email sent to the White House website regarding individual opinions of the Roswell incident.

This collection consists of letters, correspondence tracking forms, memos, reports, email and cables relating to UFO’s or extraterrestrial beings. A majority of the collection are documents which were sent to the White House by Steven M. Greer, the head of a nongovernmental organization called the Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (CSETI). Other documents include requests for information from the White House relating to UFO’s, extraterrestrial intelligence, or the alleged Roswell incident as well as news transcripts and correspondence concerning reported UFO sightings.

This collection consists of the speechwriting files of Lowell Weiss. Lowell Weiss worked as a Special Assistant to the President, Presidential Speechwriter from June 1997 - August 2000. Weiss traveled and wrote speeches for President Clinton on domestic issues. His speeches cover a broad array of topics. Major issues he wrote on concern the environment, education, the economy, and race relations. He wrote weekly radio addresses; commencement speeches; and remarks for bill signings, events, and conferences. The records consist of speeches, drafts, memoranda, correspondence, schedules, event and travel arrangements, notes, articles, and printed email.

This collection consists of the speechwriting files of Michael Waldman. Waldman served in the Clinton Administration from 1993-1999. He was responsible for writing and editing nearly 2,000 speeches, which included four State of the Union speeches and two Inaugural Addresses. This collection consists of copies of speeches and speech drafts, talking points, memoranda, background material, correspondence, reports, handwritten notes, articles, clippings, and presidential schedules. His speeches focus primarily on domestic issues and events.

Speech drafts found in this collection cover a wide spectrum of domestic issues e.g., gun control, crime, civil rights, immigration, education and the economy.

This collection contains the files of Jeff Shesol, Presidential Speechwriter. During his time at the White House, he worked on a wide range of topics. His speeches cover International issues such as: global trade, the World Trade Organization, and the International Monetary Fund. They also include domestic issues such as: school violence, the Columbine High School memorial, social security, and the minimum wage. As Deputy Chief of Presidential Speechwriting, Shesol was lead writer on key presidential messages like the State of the Union and President Clinton’s Farewell Address.

Jonathan Prince served in various capacities during the two terms of the Administration. He was one of President Clinton’s speechwriters, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, and directed the public relations effort related to the fallout from the bombing of refugees by NATO forces during the war in Kosovo. This collection consists of speech drafts, handwritten notes, memoranda, correspondence, publications, and schedules. Prince wrote most of President Clinton’s radio addresses from 1993-1997. He also specialized in dealing with domestic issues such as crime, gun control, unemployment, urban development, and welfare.

This collection contains the files of David Kusnet, Presidential Speechwriter and includes some papers of Liz Bowyer, Staff Assistant. The collections consists of drafts of the 1993 inaugural address, speeches on health care, economics, and other speeches from early in the Administration. The combined files of Kusnet and Bowyer are largely administrative in nature. A large portion of this collection consists of daily news reports, dated April 1, 1993 to February 17, 1994, compiled by the White House Office of News Analysis.

Many of the records in this collection were used by Glastris in the composition of President Clinton’s speeches. Glastris drafted speeches related to but not limited to education, electronic commerce, and the State of the Union.

This collection consists of records from the files of Terry Edmonds from the Office of Speechwriting. Edmonds was the first African American Chief Speechwriter in a presidential administration. Topics in this collection include race relations, education, veterans, youth, gun control, and senior citizens. The speech drafts in this collection are for State of the Union speeches, radio addresses, commencement speeches and special events. In addition to speeches and speech drafts, the records include letters, memorandum, schedules, reports, articles, and clippings.

This collection consists of records of Carolyn Curiel. Curiel joined the White House Executive Office as a speechwriter to President Bill Clinton in 1993. The records consist of copies of speeches and speech drafts, talking points, memoranda, background material, correspondence, reports, handwritten notes, articles, clippings, presidential schedules, and resumes. Most of the material contained in this collection was used to assist in writing speeches. Many of the speech drafts are heavily annotated with additions or deletions.

This collection consists of speech drafts, newspaper and magazine articles, memoranda, correspondence, schedules, and handwritten notes.

This collection contains Antony Blinken’s files from the National Security Council (NSC), Speechwriting Directorate. Blinken served as the chief foreign policy speechwriter in the NSC Speechwriting Directorate from 1994-1998. His materials contain background material, drafts and “final, as delivered” speeches. The speechwriting topics cover a variety of subjects: foreign trips or head of state visits; United National General Assembly addresses; speeches before domestic and international groups; memorials, commencements or holidays; State of the Union or weekly radio addresses; and editorials, book chapters or magazine articles. As an NSC speechwriter, Blinken produced speeches on major foreign policy actions during the Clinton Administration: Haiti, Iraq and Bosnia.
