Finding Aids

Finding aids describe archival collections to help users navigate their contents and identify material relevant to their research. Finding aids provide a summary of a collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Researchers may use the "Search Box" below to search by keyword or collection number (ex. 2016-0738-F). Researchers may narrow their search results by filtering by finding aid type, record type, or tag. Researchers may also select for "Digitized Content" to view only collections that have been digitized.

Finding Aid Types

Finding aid types include Freedom of Information Act Collections, Systematically Processed Collections, and Mandatory Declassification Review Collections.

Freedom of Information Act Collections provide a summary of a collection requested under the Freedom of Information Act, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Systematically Processed Collections provide a summary of a collection processed systematically, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Mandatory Declassification Review Collections provide a summary of a collection released via a Mandatory Declassification Review, and an Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf) of the declassified records.

Collection Description Tags

A Tag is a descriptive term attached to a finding aid to establish relationships between collection descriptions. Multiple tags can be used to describe collections.

This collection consists of White House Diary System and Worker and Visitor Entry System (WAVES) logs marking visits to the White House by Robert Torricelli, U.S. Representative for the state of New Jersey (1983-1996) and U.S. Senator (1997-2003). The White House Diary System logs the President’s daily activities and events with participants. WAVES monitors entry and access to White House offices and is maintained by the United States Secret Service.

Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual
This collection consists of records related to Martin Indyk, Senior Director for Near East and South Asian Affairs, and the formulation and implementation of the Dual Containment strategy for Iran and Iraq. It contains policy papers on containment strategies for Iran and Iraq, memoranda between Martin Indyk and National Security Advisor Anthony Lake, as well as reports, cables and emails about the political and security situation on the ground in Iran and Iraq. This collection consists of National Security Council memoranda, emails, and press regarding the Clinton Administration's review of the Comprehensive Test Ban and the resulting Presidential Review Directive (PRD) 19 and Presidential Decision Directive (PDD) 11. The memoranda and emails are discussions between National Security Council staff pertaining to the upcoming meetings on the PRD/PDD. The press consists of newspaper and magazine articles on nuclear testing, as well as the press release announcing the new test policy and the President's July 1993 radio address, explaining the PDD.

This system was used to track and control nuclear weapons grade material in the states of the former Soviet Union (FSU) after the end of the Cold War. This collection consists of Lyn Hogan’s records from her work in the Office of Policy Development relating to issues of child care and the child welfare system. There are a significant number of items relating to the child welfare system, including adoption, child abuse, foster care, the juvenile and family court system, and adoption legislation. The records include memos, publications, transcripts, academic reports and papers, correspondence, and articles.
Freedom of Information Act Collection Textual
This collection consists of records concerning Estonia during the Clinton Administration. A huge portion of the collection is centered around the final withdrawal of Russian troops from the newly independent Estonia (the last remaining contingent of Russian troops left in August 1994) and Hillary Clinton’s visit to the country (which occurred in the summer of 1996). The records in this collection include ratified treaties, memoranda, schedules, diagrams, reports, press releases, lists, newspaper articles, and notes.
