Finding Aids

Finding aids describe archival collections to help users navigate their contents and identify material relevant to their research. Finding aids provide a summary of a collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Researchers may use the "Search Box" below to search by keyword or collection number (ex. 2016-0738-F). Researchers may narrow their search results by filtering by finding aid type, record type, or tag. Researchers may also select for "Digitized Content" to view only collections that have been digitized.

Finding Aid Types

Finding aid types include Freedom of Information Act Collections, Systematically Processed Collections, and Mandatory Declassification Review Collections.

Freedom of Information Act Collections provide a summary of a collection requested under the Freedom of Information Act, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of responsive files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Systematically Processed Collections provide a summary of a collection processed systematically, biographic information concerning the collection, the system of arrangement of the responsive material, a container list of files, and a link to the related digitized records (if available).

Mandatory Declassification Review Collections provide a summary of a collection released via a Mandatory Declassification Review, and an Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf) of the declassified records.

Collection Description Tags

A Tag is a descriptive term attached to a finding aid to establish relationships between collection descriptions. Multiple tags can be used to describe collections.

TagUse For
AIDS (Disease)Finding aid descriptions of collections having to do with the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and/or the treatment of HIV infections. Finding aids also describe policy concerning individuals, groups, or countries seeking treatment or subsidies for AIDs and HIV.

Freedom of Information Act Collection Photographs
This collection consists of photos of President Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton attending the Women's Gymnastics Artistic final on July 25, 1996 during the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA. The photos show President Clinton seated and conversing with writer George Plimpton at the Olympic Games. Plimpton later interviewed President Clinton on Air Force One on the way back from the Olympic Games for a piece in Sports Illustrated.

This collection contains records relating to the pardon of Patricia “Patty” Hearst Shaw. The records consist of reports, correspondence, and tracking sheets. The materials include letters to the President both in support of the pardon of Patty Hearst Shaw, and letters/reports in favor of denial. Patty Hearst was kidnapped in 1974 by the Symbionese Liberation Army, and was convicted in 1976 of armed robbery. President Carter commuted her sentence in 1979. President Clinton pardoned her January 20, 2001.

This collection consists of two video recordings containing a photo-op of President Clinton and the U.S. Wrestling team in the Oval office. The President greeted the wrestlers and team officials. The team presented several gifts to the President, including two medals that were awarded at the recent competitions in Iran. The President made remarks to the team and guests.

The files contain correspondence, speech drafts and schedules, including correspondence between President Clinton and French President Jacques Chirac (1995 - 2007). The schedule for President Chirac's 1996 visit to the White House is also included.

This collection consists of records of the National Security Council (NSC) related to France; or trips by the President of the United States or by the National Security Advisor to France. Much of this segment is related to the trips of President Clinton to France. Clinton made five trips to France during his administration: June 6-8, 1994, December 14, 1995, June 27-29, 1996, May 26-27, 1998 and Clinton’s last trip to France was June 16-17, 1999. Many of the open records related to these trips include scene setters and background papers to prepare the president for meetings and events. There are also a large number of press releases and open Press office documents related to these trips. This collection is the second segment of FOIA 2008-1184-F. The first segment of this collection was released on April 18, 2014.

Despite areas of tension on nuclear testing and economic matters, President Clinton enjoyed a constructing working relationship with French Presidents Francois Mitterand and Jacques Chirac and cooperation on humanitarian, United Nations, and NATO activities. President Clinton also visited France five times during his eight years in office. The records in this collection include correspondence, memoranda, press materials, reports, briefing papers, speeches, and publications.

A Republican, the former Governor of Arizona was a staunch supporter (as the records found here attest to) of two of Clinton’s groundbreaking legislative initiatives: NAFTA and welfare reform.

The search terms “NATO” and “peacekeeping” were selected by the researcher to narrow the overwhelming search results concerning Bosnia and Kosovo. Even after narrowing the scope of the search for non-classified electronic records (emails), results still largely included assets identified as press or otherwise already available in the public domain.

This collection contains records related to the Clinton Administration’s policies and interventions in the former Yugoslavia, particularly during the Bosnian War from 1992 to 1995. It includes press materials, reports, correspondence, papers, briefing materials, memorandums, publications, and transcripts on both military and humanitarian aspects of the conflict. Additionally, there are records related to a Congressional investigation related to allegations in an April 1996 Los Angeles Times article regarding arms trafficking.
